Colac is on the Princes Highway, the A1, approximately two hours driving time southwest from Melbourne, and one hour travelling west from Geelong. The highway between Geelong and Melbourne is a six-lane freeway completed in the early 2000s, while the road between Geelong and Colac is mostly two-lane with occasional passing lanes in both directions. There is considerable local agitation to have this section of the road upgraded to two separate pairs of lanes in each direction.
